What to Expect

This year the focus will be on ARKANSAS & MISSOURI Bland Families.

Since we have 38 different Bland lines, we are hoping each line will set up a table with information  about their ancestors. We will have ample space to display pictures, books and family charts.

Please bring an item to be auctioned. It can be anything––craft items, wood, stitching, painted, jewelry, or homemade items from the kitchen. If you are not a “crafty”  person, just bring anything that you want to have auctioned––books, Bland memorabilia, pillows artifacts, White Elephant gifts, etc.

Remember that small items will be easier to take home in luggage.

We want our reunions to be about ALL Bland lines, even when we specify certain families, so put on your thinking caps and come up with something interesting and FUN!!!.

Things to do in Springfield

There are many things to do:

The Ozark Empire Fair will be going on until August 6, 2006.

The Springfield Art Museum will be having Watercolor U.S.A. until August 6, 2006.

FANTASTIC CAVERNS is in Springfield and has electric cars that make it possible for those of us who can’t walk or do stairs to enjoy caving again.

The LAURA INGLES WILDER home is a short drive east of Springfield and will be a wonderful day trip.

Branson is about 45 miles away and has Silver Dollar City along with all the music venues.

DNA TESTING UPDATE

It has been almost exactly one year since the DNA section of the Bland Heritage Website premiered.  What a difference that has made!  Our project members have more than doubled!  Just prior to the 21st Annual Bland Reunion last year, we had results back for 13 volunteers; now we have 28.  In addition, our first English volunteer has returned his kit, and another kit (US volunteer) has recently been mailed.

We now have four distinct family branches represented:  Group A (Northern Neck, VA); Group B (James River, VA), Group C (Pendleton Co, WV), and Group D.  The location for Group D has not been pinpointed, as one participant traces his ancestor back to IL and the other to MD.  We also have 8 unconnected participants.  These gentlemen are just waiting for more volunteers so that they can find a match!

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to have your line tested.  The results take 4 or 5 weeks, so, if you want your results back before the reunion, please get that kit ordered!  To participate, log on to the Bland Heritage website at www.blandheritage.org/.  As a family project, we get a discounted price.  The 25-marker test is $159, and the 37-marker test (my recommendation) is $189.  A new 59-marker test is now available ($269), but I don't think it's necessary to get that one at this time.  We can always add later (at $99).

Last year, for the first time, we offered a drawing with a 37-marker kit as the prize.  Brent Bland, who was in attendance in Nashville, won the drawing and took advantage of the offer.  We have decided to do it again this year!  Many people did realize that it was a FREE offer.  I promised to put the word “FREE” all over the flyer this year, so don’t miss this opportunity.  Your odds are much better than the lottery here, folks, and the value of this prize is $269!  And did I mention that you don’t have to be present to win?  So, if you’ve been toying with the idea of taking the DNA test and perhaps money is a deterrent, here’s your chance.  Return that flyer!

Ladies, although you can’t participate, your father, brother, uncle, or cousin (surname Bland) can be tested for you (with you footing the bill, of course).  I can speak from experience, as my brother agreed to the painless test for my line.

Hope to have more news in August.  See you at the Reunion!
